Montana-Specific Insurance Considerations

Glacier National Park Wedding Permits
Weddings in Glacier National Park require a Special Use Permit ($125 non-refundable application fee). Ceremonies are limited to two hours, including arrival, set-up and wrap-up, and to two permits per location per day — four per day at the park’s amphitheaters. A National Park Service monitor is required for events over 20 people at most locations. Catered food service is not permitted, and neither is amplified sound, arches, tables, runners, or cordoning off the ceremony area. Applications are accepted up to one year in advance and must reach the park at least 20 business days before the event; the park recommends four weeks and notes processing can take longer in busy seasons. Glacier does not publish a standing insurance requirement for wedding permits — insurance may be required at the superintendent’s discretion. Where it is required, the policy names “the United States of America” as Additional Insured, with Glacier National Park, PO Box 128, West Glacier, MT 59936 as Certificate Holder. Approved ceremony locations, group-size caps and seasonal closures change year to year, so check the park’s locations page before booking.

Montana State Parks
Events at Montana State Parks (FWP-managed lands) require special use permits for groups of 30 or more people. Commercial events require permits submitted at least 45 days in advance, with fees of $3 per participant or $300 per event; a $25 rush fee applies to applications submitted within five days. FWP may require proof of liability insurance naming “State of Montana – FWP” as Additional Insured. FWP sets coverage amounts case by case rather than publishing a fixed limit.

Montana Special Event Liquor Permits
Montana’s Department of Revenue issues special permits to sell alcohol at events. Fees are $10 per day for beer and table wine, $20 per day for all-beverages (fraternal), and $1,000 per season for a beer and table wine sports season permit. Applications must be presented five business days in advance, though the department may waive that for good cause. Eligible applicants aren’t limited to nonprofits: 501(c)(3), 501(c)(4) and 501(c)(6) organizations may each apply for up to 12 permits per calendar year, and so may licensed Montana wineries — accredited Montana postsecondary schools, professional and junior hockey organizations, and groups raising funds for a person in need also qualify. Veterans’ posts and fraternal lodges that already hold a liquor license are limited to three special events a year; unlicensed posts and lodges may receive up to 12 permits a year. If you’re serving alcohol without selling it (hosted bar), Host Liquor Liability is included in all our policies at no extra cost.

Catering Permits & Local Law Enforcement
In Montana, licensed caterers with a catering endorsement must notify local law enforcement before serving alcohol at a catered event. State law lets a local government charge a fee of $35 for this — the amount is fixed statewide, though not every county charges it. Two limits catch people booking rural venues: a catered event must be within 100 miles of the caterer’s licensed premises, and it can’t be held at a location that already holds its own alcohol license. We provide certificates that meet all catering authorization requirements.

City, County & University Venue Requirements
Montana has no statewide statute setting insurance limits for private event hosts — requirements come from each venue or local government. Public venues here often set limits below the $1M/$2M commercial norm: the City of Missoula’s Street Use Permit requires $750,000 per claim / $1,500,000 per occurrence with “City of Missoula” named as Additional Insured, and Yellowstone County, which owns MetraPark, requires $750,000 per claim / $1,000,000 aggregate naming Yellowstone County, with endorsement form CG 32 87 05 10. Montana State University requires $1,000,000 per occurrence / $2,000,000 aggregate naming “Montana State University, its agents, officers, officials, employees and volunteers,” and for any event serving alcohol, $1,000,000 liquor liability with the State of Montana and MSU added by endorsement. Confirm your venue’s specific limits and wording before you buy — we’ll issue the certificate to match.

Mountain & Winter Event Considerations
Montana’s mountain venues—Big Sky, Whitefish, Bridger Bowl—experience extreme winter weather that can affect event access. Many mountain venues recommend event cancellation or postponement coverage for winter events. Road closures and weather delays are common November through April. Review your policy for weather-related triggers.

Luxury Resort Insurance Requirements
Premium Montana venues such as Montage Big Sky and Paws Up Montana may require higher limits and property-specific Additional Insured endorsements depending on event type and vendor role. These properties don’t publish their requirements, so ask your venue contact for the exact wording and limits — then contact us for high-limit quotes.
