Colorado – Specific Insurance Considerations

  • Colorado Liquor Permits
Colorado uses a dual licensing system for special event liquor permits—you need approval from both your local licensing authority and the Colorado Department of Revenue. Applications must be submitted at least 30 days before your event. However, most private events (weddings, private parties) where alcohol is provided free—not sold—do not require a permit. If you’re serving alcohol without selling it, Host Liquor Liability is included in all policies at no extra cost. If selling alcohol (cash bar, ticket sales), you need Liquor Liability coverage—available as an add-on.
  • Altitude Considerations
Colorado venues range from 5,000 feet (Denver) to 10,000+ feet (mountain summit venues). High altitude affects guests—especially those from sea level—causing fatigue, headaches, and increased alcohol sensitivity. Many mountain venues recommend guests arrive 1-2 days early to acclimate. Altitude doesn’t change your insurance requirements, but it’s worth noting that liability coverage responds to altitude-related injuries the same as any other incident.
  • Mountain Weather & Cancellation
Mountain weather can change rapidly, particularly during afternoon thunderstorm season (July-August). Winter events face snow and road closure risks that could prevent vendors or guests from arriving. For mountain events, event cancellation or postponement coverage is highly recommended. Review policy terms for specific weather triggers including road closures and hazardous travel conditions.
  • City of Boulder Requirements
Boulder is one of several Colorado municipalities requiring Waiver of Subrogation on all event insurance certificates. We provide this endorsement at no extra cost. Boulder also requires specific Additional Insured language—our certificates include the exact wording required.
  • Rocky Mountain National Park & Federal Lands
Events in Rocky Mountain National Park, national forests, and federal lands require certificates naming the appropriate federal agency as Additional Insured. National Park Service permits have specific timelines (typically 2+ weeks) and requirements. We provide certificates meeting all federal requirements.
  • Casino Night Prohibition
Colorado special event liquor permits cannot be issued for events involving gambling. Casino nights, poker nights, and similar games of chance are prohibited under Colorado liquor law. If you’re planning a fundraiser with gaming elements, you’ll need to explore other licensing options.
