Brawl Breaks Out At Wedding Reception

“I do” turned into “let’s get ready to rumble” for one couple outside of Buffalo, NY. when a brawl broke out at their wedding reception on Saturday, September 13th.

The Buffalo News reported that seven police agencies were called to the scene at the Orchard Park Country Club after a massive fight broke out just after 11 p.m., as the reception ended and guests were readying to go home. “Things were said that can never be taken back,” says one witness; the paper reports that family members were yelling of their hatred for each other.

About 200 people attended the reception and WIVB reported that an arriving officer saw at least 100 people fighting. The bride and groom were reportedly not among those fighting but the groom was witnessed attempting to help guests exit.

One man received stitches for a head injury, and a few others were treated on the scene. No arrests were made, and while the State Liquor Authority has opened an investigation into what transpired.

SLA spokesman William Crowley said authority investigators are reviewing the incident because the country club has a liquor license.

“The Orchard Park police did reach out to our enforcement office and we are in contact with the Police Department,” Crowley said.

And in regards to the property damage at the club?

“We still are waiting for the damage estimates from management at the country club,” Orchard Park Police Chief Mark Pacholec said, “but it would be up to the country club to pursue restitution. That would be a civil issue.”

Criminal mischief charges could be pursued if witnesses identified people who destroyed property, the chief said.

Benny Chieffo of Jammin’ Sound, which provided music for the reception, described the couple as excellent people whose goal was to provide a joyful time for their wedding guests.

“It was a beautiful ceremony at the country club and an excellent reception that followed,” Chieffo said. “I just hope that the guests don’t forget about the beautiful wedding. It was a picture-perfect wedding except for that last half hour.”

Tragedy Strikes At Burning Man Festival

A woman was killed at Burning Man just after midnight the morning of August 28th.

According to Burning Man spokesman Jim Graham, Alicia Louise Cipicchio, a 29-year-old resident of Jackson, Wyoming, suffered fatal injuries early Thursday morning after falling under a large vehicle at the annual Burning Man event in the Black Rock Desert in Northern Nevada near the Center Camp at the festival.

It is not known whether drugs or alcohol played a role in the incident but
Burning Man organizers are continuing to work with law enforcement to
investigate the accident.

This is an unfortunate event but not completely uncommon as deaths do happen at
Burning Man due to the location of the festival.

Humboldt General Hospital is more than 120 miles from Black Rock City, but travel time is more than 6 hours because of the roads. The shortest travel time also adds 100 miles to the trip, and while the hospital has a helipad for air transport, dispatching and getting there still takes time.

Burners should be aware that medical care beyond what volunteer doctors and health-care workers provide can be tough to get quickly and that while the most recent death before today was in 2007 when an attendee fell under a trailer, the risk Burners take when migrating to Black Rock City is very high.

Our thoughts go out to the family, friends and camp mates of the victim.

Electric Zoo Returns To New York With New Safety Measures

Returning for its 6th year, Electric Zoo is set to feature over 145 of the world’s top producers and DJs across six stages on Randall’s Island Park in New York.

For three days, a thumping lineup of the world’s best DJs and electronic music acts will descend on New York drawing thousands of fans who want to see
international DJ heavyweights like David Guetta, Armin Van Buuren, A-Trak, and much more!

While Electric Zoo organizers are optimistic about the 2014 event, the memory of what happened in 2013 still lingers.

Just last year, two Electric Zoo attendees died as a result of drug overdoses, causing event organizers to shutdown the event early.

In an effort to increase safety and in light of the recent surge of alcohol and drug-related incidents and accidents that have flooded music festivals, Made Event, promoters of
Electric Zoo, have launched a campaign called Come to Life, requiring all attendees to watch a two minute film–“The Molly”–before entering the festival gates. The PSA
emphasizes being totally present in the moment rather than relying on other substances to enjoy the show.

In addition to the PSA, “zookeepers” will be on hand providing water and electrolytes for those in need. Made Event has also instituted background checks for all festival vendors and employees, hired more undercover police officers on-site, added drug-sniffing dogs, and banned the use of CamelBak water packs that may be used to smuggle in illegal drugs.

With all of the new safety measures and a killer lineup, this year’s Electric Zoo is sure to be one to remember.

All About Burning Man

It’s that time of the year again. In honor of the Burning Man festival beginning today in Nevada’s Black Rock Desert, we’d like to answer a few common questions about this special event.

What is Burning Man and where does it take place?
Burning Man has been around for over 25 years is now one of the most famous art and music festivals in the world. The event takes place in a temporary city called Black Rock City (or The Playa as it is otherwise known) that is built in a barren stretch of desert and comprised of various self-sustaining camps or
villages.

When does Burning Man take place?
Burning Man begins the week prior to Labor Day and runs through the Labor Day weekend. In 2014, the Burning Man dates are Monday, August 25th to Monday, September 1st.

How big is the festival?

In 2013, nearly 70,000 people traveled into Nevada for the event and it brought an
estimated $55 million in economic impact to Northern Nevada, up from $44 million in 2012.

Is it just a bunch of hippies hanging out in the desert?

No. Tech moguls, socialites, heirs and heiresses, and Hollywood starlets have all been
attendees of Burning Man.

How do people get around on The Playa?
Due to the delicate nature of the Black Rock Desert as well as the dust levels, burners are asked to only use their vehicles to reach their campsite and either walk or use bicycles to get around following their arrival.

What’s the deal with the 10 Principles of Burning Man?
The 10 Principles of Burning Man were written by Burning Man Founder, Larry Harvey, in 2004 and were crafted not as strict rules of how people should be and act, but as a
reflection of the community’s spirit and culture as it developed since the event’s founding.
The 10 Principles of Burning Man are as follows:

1) Radical Inclusion
Anyone may be a part of Burning Man. We welcome and respect the stranger. No
prerequisites exist for participation in our community.
2) Gifting
Burning Man is devoted to acts of gift giving. The value of a gift is unconditional. Gifting does not contemplate a return or an exchange for something of equal value.
3) Decommodification
In order to preserve the spirit of gifting, our community seeks to create social
environments that are unmediated by commercial sponsorships, transactions, or
advertising. We stand ready to protect our culture from such exploitation. We resist the
substitution of consumption for participatory experience.
4) Radical Self-reliance
Burning Man encourages the individual to discover, exercise and rely on his or her inner
resources.
5) Radical Self-expression
Radical self-expression arises from the unique gifts of the individual. No one other than the individual or a collaborating group can determine its content. It is offered as a gift
to others. In this spirit, the giver should respect the rights and liberties of the recipient.
6) Communal Effort
Our community values creative cooperation and collaboration. We strive to produce,
promote and protect social networks, public spaces, works of art, and methods of
communication that support such interaction.
7) Civic Responsibility
We value civil society. Community members who organize events should assume
responsibility for public welfare and endeavor to communicate civic responsibilities to
participants. They must also assume responsibility for conducting events in accordance
with local, state and federal laws.
8) Leaving No Trace
Our community respects the environment. We are committed to leaving no physical trace of our activities wherever we gather. We clean up after ourselves and endeavor, whenever possible, to leave such places in a better state than when we found them.
9) Participation
Our community is committed to a radically participatory ethic. We believe that
transformative change, whether in the individual or in society, can occur only through the medium of deeply personal participation. We achieve being through doing. Everyone is
invited to work. Everyone is invited to play. We make the world real through actions that open the heart.
10) Immediacy
Immediate experience is, in many ways, the most important touchstone of value in our
culture. We seek to overcome barriers that stand between us and a recognition of our inner selves, the reality of those around us, participation in society, and contact with a natural world exceeding human powers. No idea can substitute for this experience.

72 Hours Prior To The Event Start, Jabberwocky Festival Cancelled

Jabberwocky Festival ticket holders left stunned as event is cancelled only 72 hours prior to start.

Summer and Fall are popular seasons for music festivals and this past year has been no exception. With so much competition for ticket sales and artists, it is no surprise that some festivals don’t have the outcome event organizers intended for.

With just 72 hours until the event start, event organizer All Tomorrow’s Parties (ATP) announced that London’s Jabberwocky Festival was cancelled due to poor ticket sales.

In a statement on their website, ATP wrote:

We have put everything into promoting Jabberwocky, and despite healthy ticket sales; all our efforts could not take those sales to the point that we needed to finally stage the event. Over the past month and all the way up until this moment we have tried every possible course of action to follow through in delivering Jabberwocky to you, but the position we unfortunately find ourselves in as a result of a succession of events that have lost money in an increasingly aggressive festival market, means we are no longer able to do so.

With some festival-goers and bands were already in or in-transit to London, many performers are scrambling to play other shows in the area to appease those who now no-longer have a festival to attend.

While the cancellation of the Jabberwocky Festival came as a surprise to ticketbuyers, those in the music industry were not surprised at the announcement due to both venue issues and financial problems ATP has faced leading up to the event. Jabberwocky was initially meant to be held at the Olympic Park in London, where ATP briefly sold tickets for it but then the event was re-announced at the ExCel Centre in Docklands in East London, a conference venue more known for dental industry conference showcases than concerts.

Despite this recent cancellation, ATP still has 10 concerts listed on its website, including a festival in Iceland next year, headlined by Belle & Sebastian. ATP stated all of the future festivals will go ahead as planned but will festival-goers trust the firm enough to buy tickets for the special events?

The company has already survived one liquidation with its reputation intact among music fans and bands, but at that time, few fans lost money. This time, some might.

While ATP has told fans who bought tickets from a company called Dash to contact it for a refund; Dash is telling people that ATP has their money. “We are very keen to learn where the money has gone!” Dash says in a statement on its Facebook page. It is considering legal action to get the money back.

Just one more example of a Special Event gone wrong…

Outside Lands Festival Takes Steps To Increase Safety

On Friday, August 8th, thousands of people will descend on San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park to celebrate the 2014 Outside Lands music festival.

Featuring over 80 acts across three days – including Arctic Monkeys,
Macklemore, Kanye West, and Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers – executive vice president of Another Planet Entertainment, Allen Scott, spoke with SF Weekly recently to discuss a few changes that are being put into place for this year’s festival to help ensure the safety of those in attendance:

Smile! You’re On Camera
“We added video surveillance on-site this year,” stated Mr. Scott. “We continue to add tools to be able to respond and become more efficient at addressing any
problems.”

Let Your Totem Flag Fly Free, But Not Too High
Totems were a topic that came up for Mr. Scott when discussing this year’s Outside Lands and decisions were made as to just what these totems could be made of and how high they could fly. “It’s a way to express yourself but also a way for people to find you,” said Mr. Scott. “This year we decided that totems can be no taller than six feet, half an inch thick, and must be made of light material like swim tubes, light plastic, or balloons. No wood or metal or PVC.”

More Water To Keep Festival-Goers Hydrated
“We’re upping our refillable water stations. We’ll have three tanks throughout the festival with eight kiosks on each tank,” stated Scott. “In the past we used five-gallon tanks like what you have in your office, this year we’re using 2,000-gallon tanks”

5 Reasons Why You Should Acquire Event Insurance For Your Special Event

When most people think about insurance policies, they think of them in the traditional varieties of car insurance and homeowner’s insurance. However, there is another type that event organizers and vendors should be well aware of: Special Event Insurance.

Special Event Insurance is just that, a specially tailored insurance policy that may be purchased for a wide variety of events from car shows and fundraisers, to theatrical performances and much more.

Below are 5 reasons why purchasing event insurance for your special event is money well spent whether you’re organizing the event or are a vendor.

1) Accidents
How many times have you seen or read news stories about mishaps at events? Regardless of what type of event is being held, accidents can happen and an event insurance policy is essential for the protection of organizers and vendors alike.

2) Property & Damage to Premises
Whether you’re renting a venue space or having an event in a private residence, regardless of the amount of people in attendance, chances are high for some premises damage.
To give a short example, if you rented a space and a fire occurred during your event that caused $92,000 in damages, the cost of repairs would be fully covered by the policy pending if your damage to premises limit was $100,000.

3) Care, Custody, Control Liability
Most liability policies have provisions that exclude coverage for physical damage or loss to property while it is in the care, custody or control of the event organizer or vendor but with special event insurance, it is a coverage that can be added if desired. A great example of how this is type of liability is beneficial is the case of Caroline and her husband’s 50th birthday party. Caroline rented an elegant ballroom for her husband’s birthday party and unfortunately a bottle of red wine was broken during the celebration, staining both the custom Persian carpet and adjacent travertine floor. The owner of the ballroom sued Caroline to recoup the expenses to replace the entire carpet and a large section of travertine floor – amounting to $48,500. Fortunately for Caroline, she had purchased the Care, Custody, Control Liability, so the loss was covered.

4) Liquor Liability
Liquor Liability provides coverage and defense for an event holder who charges for alcohol and is sued for bodily injury or property damage caused by intoxicated event guests. If there is any money changing hands and alcohol is served, Liquor Liability coverage provides the proper protection needed by event holders and vendors alike.

5) Comprehensive
When you break it down, event insurance is all about protection. The most important benefit of event insurance is that it is a single, comprehensive policy specifically tailored to the needs of those holding special events or providing vendor services at events.
